Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper compares the publishing characteristics and academic influence of overseas comprehensive geriatric journals in different academic zones, aiming to explore the measures for improving the sustainable development of geriatric journals in China and provide a reference for the high-quality development of comprehensive scientific journals. [Methods] Six comprehensive geriatric journals sponsored by overseas geriatrics societies, including 3 journals in Q1/Q2 zone and 3 journals in Q3/Q4 zone of academic influence, were selected. The citation indicators in JCR and Web of Science and related journal websites were employed to analyze the contributions of different publication types to academic influence and the differences of publication topics. Furthermore, suggestions were put forward to strengthen the academic influence of comprehensive scientific journals in China in view of their development status and subject characteristics. [Findings] The journals in Q1/Q2 zone have a wider distribution of source countries and a higher number of publications than those in Q3/Q4 zone, with abundant publications of Chinese scholars. The journals in Q1/Q2 zone have higher citation rates of papers and lower rates of zero citations. These journals have low proportions of essays and reviews, while they publish more papers in featured and thematic columns and have higher cited frequency than those in Q3/Q4 zone. The academic quality of guidelines and consensus published by journals in Q3/Q4 zone remains to be improved. The journals in Q1/Q2 zone have fewer sub-specialty topics and focus more on multi-disciplinary comprehensive topics than the journals in Q3/Q4 zone. [Conclusions] To improve the academic influence of comprehensive scientific journals, efforts should be made to strengthen the overall management of the quantity and quality of different types of papers, attach importance to featured columns, plan multi-dimensional special topics, and pay attention to multi-disciplinary comprehensive topics.
