Abstract:

[Purposes] This study analyzes the problems in the development of special topics/columns of domestic academic journals from the perspective of editorial staff, which provides data and methods for enhancing the role of special topics/columns. [Methods] A questionnaire was designed to investigate editorial staff of academic journals about the development of special topics/columns, the influencing factors, attitude to and satisfaction with the development, and challenges. The results of the questionnaire were statistically analyzed. [Findings] A total of 83.5% of the journals have designed the special topics/columns. The success rate of soliciting contributions is 86.0%. A total of 85.9% of the editorial staff are willing to put effort into the development of special topics/columns, and 68.5% are satisfied with the development of special topics/columns. The annual proportion of articles in special topics/columns is <25% in 85.3% of journals. When the annual proportion of special topics/columns is >25%-50%, the satisfaction with the special topics/columns is the highest. The annual investment in the special topics/columns is <50000 CNY among 78.3% of the journals. The implementation rate of special topic/column planning, success rate of soliciting contributions, annual investment, annual proportion of articles in special topics/columns, and satisfaction of Chinese journals are lower than those of English journals. A total 99.5% of the respondents complain about the challenges in the development of special topics/columns. [Conclusions] At the moment, domestic academic journals attach great importance to the development of special topics/columns, but more efforts should be made to explore the specific scale of the special topics/columns. There is still room for further improvement in the development of special topics/columns of Chinese journals. According to the investigation, the development of the special topics/columns faces the challenges of low journal impact, insufficient editorial staff, low response rate of experts, delay in providing manuscripts, and poor quality. Thus, efforts should be made to highlight the characteristics, strengthen the cohesion, and improve the influence of journals. Moreover, journals should increase editors through multiple channels, try intensive publishing, optimize the method of soliciting contributions, mobilize important partners, improve the academic ability and service ability of editors, and increase the fund input and policy support (especially Chinese journals). They should cooperate with relevant organizations to build special topics/columns, so as to improve the success rate and efficiency in the development of special topics/columns and provide a path for building brand and improving impact and ability of journals.
