Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper preliminarily investigates the quality of life of academic journal editors and explores the influencing factors, so as to provide a reference for improving editors' physical and mental health and promoting the development of journals. [Methods] Based on the SF-36 health survey, the Questionnaire for Quality of Life of Academic Journal Editors in China was created on Wenjuanxing (wjx.cn) and sent to several journal editor QQ groups and WeChat groups, and the responses were downloaded for analysis. [Findings] Among the 8 dimensions of the SF-36, the score of physical functioning was the highest and that of general health was the lowest, which was consistent with the norm. However, the score of role physical was higher than the norm, and scores of bodily pain and mental health were lower than the norm. Multivariate analysis showed that the risk factors of editors' quality of life might include frequency of overtime ≥3 per week, male, working for less than 10 years, no job title, not living with family members, and journal failing to be included in A Guide to the Core Journal of China (2017), Chinese Science Citation Database, or Source Journal for Chinese Scientific and Technical Papers and Citations. [Conclusions] The quality of life of academic journal editors is close to the domestic norm. Male, living alone, short working period, frequent overtime, and journal failing to be included in any domestic core journal database may be related to the quality of life of academic journal editors.
