Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper aims to discuss the effect of special issue on the influence of journals under the background that the publication of special issues has become the main strategy of journals. [Methods] According to the statistical data from CNKI, we compared the cited frequency and downloads of the feature articles and unsolicited articles published on Tropical Geography from 2014 to 2019. [Findings] (1) Special issues can remarkably improve the influence of journals. With the special issues, chances are high that the journals can be recognized by domestic evaluation system and included in foreign databases. (2) In general, the cited frequency of feature articles is higher than that of unsolicited articles and the difference is insignificant. (3) The downloads of feature articles account for 63.6% of the total downloads of the journal, which are much more than that of the unsolicited articles. Thus, special issues can attract the attention of authors and readers and significantly enhance academic communication. (4) The timeliness, publication interval between articles of similar topics, characteristics of the topic name, coverage of author group, number of articles, title and education background of the first author, and publicity determine the effect of special issues. [Conclusions] Planning special issues can effectively enhance the external reputation and influence of journals, but not all special issues can achieve significant results. Except for quality content, journals should attach great importance to publicity and promotion and knowledge service of special issues. In addition, journals should emphasize the brand building to attract talents for the planning of special issues.
