Abstract:

[Purposes] This study aims to understand the publication bias of representative medical academic journals in China and to provide references for the formulation of relevant publication policies of medical journals in China. [Methods] Sixteen journals of Chinese Core Journal Catalogue (2014 Edition) ranked first in medical and health disciplines were investigated, and their publication biases were investigated. The state, causes, effects, and countermeasures of publication bias were analyzed. [Findings] There are different levels of publication biases in all 16 journals. Publication bias is caused by many factors. Publication bias has a negative impact on evidence-based medicine practice, clinical work, and scientific research. Reducing publication bias requires the participation of researchers, reviewers, editors, and fund sponsors. As a link between all parties, journals play a key role in reducing publication bias. [Conclusions] Publishing bias exists objectively. Academic journals should improve the quality of scientific researchers through training, standardize and improve the process of reviewing and recruiting manuscripts, maintain the impartiality and independence of editors, and call for rational understanding through practical actions to reduce publication bias.
