Abstract:

[Purposes] The engagement of scientific journal editors in publishing research is often hindered by a lack of proactive awareness and insufficient actionability. This study aims to investigate the constraining factors and underlying mechanisms of this issue, providing theoretical and practical insights for talent development in the field of scientific journals. [Methods] Guided by the S-O-R model, we adopted a grounded theory approach. We conducted in-depth interviews with 22 editors of scientific journals who had more than five years of editorial experience. Key concepts and categories were identified, and logical relationships were deduced through systematic analysis. [Findings] External stimuli such as career prospects, platform support, and disciplinary background contribute to negative cognition and behaviors among scientific journal editors, thereby influencing their engagement in publishing research. [Conclusions] Based on the findings, this study proposes several recommendations, including improving institutional frameworks, fostering research-friendly environments, and integrating research with editorial responsibilities to mitigate the identified constraints, to promote talent management and personal development in scientific journals.
