Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper aims to analyze the status quo of professional ethical demands of editors in Chinese high-quality scientific journals, so as to understand the factors influencing ethical expectations of journal managers on editors and provide references for adjusting editors' professional motives and behavior by ethical factors. [Methods] Taking the indexed journals in the Excellence Action Plan for China's STM Journals as cases, we collected relevant texts on ethical demands in job description of editors as empirical data. Meanwhile, by introducing the grounded theory to conduct open coding, axial coding, and selective coding on the texts, we analyzed the key factors and correlations of professional ethical demands for scientific journal editors. [Findings] Individual identity, talent demand, occupational system, and occupational convention significantly influence the professional ethical demands of editors. However, they have different influencing ways and paths. Generally, we build a professional editor ethical demand model based on four main categories and establish an effect regulation mechanism for each variable. [Conclusions] The professional ethical demands of editors are greatly influenced by the individual perception of the job seekers, which causes high subjectivity and randomness. The professional ethical demands are adjusted with the journal development planning, editor function perception, and individual professional emotion intensity. Additionally, China advocates the professional ethical model atmosphere of "love and dedication to work", which also greatly affects the ethical self-discipline and professional identity of editors.
