Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper aims to explore the regional coverage of academic journals and the characteristics of publication association between different regions to promote the high-quality construction of academic journals and their positive interaction with academic research. [Methods] The study used Moran's I to analyze the spatial pattern of academic journals in China, the Theil index and measurement methods to analyze the regional differences and disciplinary differences in the number of core papers produced and published in 2021, the social network method to analyze the association characteristics between provinces where core papers were produced and provinces where they were published, and the geographical detector to analyze factors influencing regional associations and the number of manuscripts sourced from different regions. [Findings] The distribution of academic journals in China is unbalanced, with a few provinces hosting the vast majority of academic journals. The overall spatial correlation of academic journal distribution is negative, with Shanxi and Hebei being local lowlands and Guangdong a local highland. There is a multi-centered trend between the output of core papers and the publication, with the latter being more unbalanced. On the whole, Central China and Northeast China have more balanced distributions, and the difference within North China is the greatest. The regional imbalance of journals at the disciplinary level is particularly pronounced in medical journals and industrial journals. The correlation between the output of core papers and publication is concentrated in a few provinces, with clear clustering characteristics in two "two-way spillover plates". The academic output capacity of provinces in the "broker plate" is good, but they still need to strengthen their own journal development. The internal attributes of journals and research investment are the dominant factors affecting the development of regional academic journals. The development of academic journals in provinces with higher academic output is relatively prosperous, but it is easy to appear regional biases. There is a synergistic effect among the impact factors. More researchers in universities, economic support, and cooperative institutions in the region suggest more conducive it is to the formation of a good academic environment, so as to promote academic exchanges and the high-quality construction of academic journals. [Conclusions] The regional imbalance in the development of Chinese academic journals is more severe than that in academic output. Strengthening talent training, increasing scientific research investment, and appropriately increasing publication frequency are conducive to the development of regional academic journals and promoting academic interaction.
