Abstract:

[Purposes] This study systematically takes stock of the development status of China's international journals in humanities and social sciences in recent years and predicts the development potential and trends of ESCI journals, aiming to provide a reference for enhancing the international impact of these journals. [Methods] On the basis of the journal information in the JCR from 2015 to 2021 and on the official websites, we systematically investigated the scale, subjects, impact factors, self-cited rates, and other data of these journals. [Findings] There are only 11 SSCI-indexed journals, 2 A&HCI-indexed journals, and 50 ESCI-indexed journals hosted by China, which are disproportionate to China's research strength. Although the indexes of journal impact factor, category quartile, and journal citation indicators have grown, there are still dilemmas such as fewer journals, limited disciplines and competitiveness, and dependence on foreign platforms. [Conclusions] More attention and support should be given to China's international journals in the humanities and social sciences in the future. It is suggested that more journals be encouraged to join the ESCI to expand the scale of journals indexed by SSCI and A&HCI. Efforts should be made to strengthen the internationalization of journals in all aspects and promote the international dissemination of Chinese topics. At the same time, an independent international academic journal publishing platform and corresponding evaluation system should be constructed.
