Abstract:

[Purposes]This paper compares the reference accuracy of Chinese series and medical academ ic journals w ith high influence, and analyzes their differences in order to improve the reference accuracy.[Methods]96 articles published in five Chinese series and medical academ ic journals were selected. We checked the authors, titles, journals, year, volume(issue) and pages according to PubMed and some other databases of 1599 English and Chinese references from journals. The coincidence rate of the bibliographical reference in PubMed w ith the full-text of the original reference and the correlation between editors and the reference accuracy were analyzed.[Findings]The total citation error rate was 22.0%.The difference between Chinese series and medical academ ic journalswas significant(18.7%vs24.8%,P<0.01).The citation error rate of English referenceswas20.5%,and the difference between these two kinds of journals was significant(17.4%vs 23.2%,P<0.01).The citation error rate of Chinese referenceswas higher than that of English references(27.9%vs 20.5%,P<0.01).The coincidence rate was as high as 98.4%,and the editors were related to the reference accuracy.[Conclusions]The reference accuracy of Chinese series is higher than that ofmedical academ ic journals.PubMed is a useful tool for checking English references. Then it is suggested that authors and editors should pay equal attention to checking Chinese and English references.
