Abstract:

Purposes This study systematically examines the multiple roles of scientific journal editors throughout the entire process of special issue publishing, and proposes their positioning as an “academic community nexus”, thereby providing a new perspective for research on the professional value of editors. Methods Taking the special issue publishing of Resources Science as a typical case, this study employed literature analysis and case study methods to systematically summarize the role positioning of scientific journal editors during the special issue publishing process. Findings Scientific journal editors play fourfold core roles in special issue publishing: as proactive “academic map makers” in the topic selection and planning stage; as active “academic network builders” in the manuscript solicitation stage; as impartial “academic standard gatekeepers” in the quality control stage; and as innovative “academic value promoters” in the publication and dissemination stage. These four roles mutually reinforce one another throughout the entire process of special issue publishing, jointly constituting an “academic community nexus” and enabling the functions of connection, integration, and transformation. Conclusions Positioning scientific journal editors as an “academic community nexus” contributes to a renewed understanding of their professional value and provides insights into the role of editors in cultivating world-class scientific journals.
