Abstract:

Purposes To promote the development of world-class STM journals in China, compare and analyze the strengths and differences of Chinese scientific journals, and propose strategies for enhancing their influence. Methods Based on the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) data from 2023 to 2025, this study examines the development trends of SCI journals in the United States, the United Kingdom, China and etc from 2022 to 2024, focusing on dimensions such as the number of SCI journals, disciplinary distribution, publication volume, total citation, impact factor, journal citation indicators and etc. Findings Despite a global decline in the total number of SCI journals, China’s SCI journal count showed modest growth, with three new disciplines added in 2024. The mean and median impact factors, as well as the mean and median journal citation indicators, ranked first for three consecutive years, indicating the highest annual averages and medians among all countries. However, China’s SCI journals lag behind the U.S. and U.K. in total count, average article output per journal, disciplinary coverage, and half-life of citations, while also lacking “flagship journals” with annual outputs exceeding 1000 articles. Conclusions China should further expand the total number of journals and disciplinary coverage; advance the cluster development of journals; cultivate high-quality journals while also creating super-large journals; prioritize the construction of sustained journal influence; and emphasize multi-dimensional evaluation to explore a journal assessment system aligned with new development trends.
