Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper aims to explore the difference of academic influence between non-English journals and English journals in the non-English speaking countries and the structural characteristics of impact factors for non-English journals. [Methods] Taking English and non-English journals indexed by SCI in 10 non-English speaking countries as research objects, we used Web of Science and JCR as data sources, and used total cites, impact factor, average journal impact factor percentile (aJIFP), and the journal PR8 index as indicators to evaluate the academic influence of scientific journals. The difference of academic influence between English and non-English journals was statistically analyzed. [Findings] Non-English journals (with the exception of Dutch journals) have significantly lower academic influence indicators than English journals; in 10 non-English speaking countries, the national language journals have significantly lower academic influence indicators than English journals in 9 countries, and impact factors of their national language journals are largely contributed by domestic scholars (especially in Chinese journals). [Conclusions] The international influence of non-English journals is very limited. Therefore, China’s outstanding scientific journals may consider English and Chinese editions to be published simultaneously.
