Abstract:

[Purposes] Construct a scientific and rational evaluation indicator system for assessing the social influence of science popularization journals, providing theoretical foundations and practical guidance for optimizing their online dissemination effectiveness and enhancing social influence. [Methods] Based on reader behaviors in the online dissemination process of science popularization journals, an evaluation indicator system was developed based on Altmetrics, encompassing four dimensions: pre-reading inquiry, reading acquisition, reading utilization, and post-reading feedback. A total of 309 Chinese science popularization journals were selected as evaluation subjects, with data collected from platforms such as Baidu, WeChat, Douban, and Dangdang. The CRITIC weighting method was employed to assign weights to evaluation indicators, and the TOPSIS method was applied to calculate comprehensive social influence scores for each journal. [Findings] Indicators such as website visits, search queries, downloads, and shares were assigned higher weights. The social influence of science popularization journals, ranked by category from highest to lowest, was as follows: comprehensive science popularization, technology and engineering, natural sciences, health and medicine, and agricultural technology. The evaluation results demonstrated high applicability, with strong performance in precision, F1-score (harmonic mean of precision and recall), and average precision (AP). [Conclusions] The constructed indicator system proves feasible and applicable for evaluating the social influence of science popularization journals, effectively addressing the limitations of current evaluation approaches. Furthermore, the empirical findings and recommendations provide actionable references for enhancing the social influence of such journals.
