Abstract:

[Purposes] By investigating and analyzing the publication period data from 66 Chinese and English journals on the Chinese Optics Journal Website, we aim to analyze the publication patterns within the journal cluster and propose strategies for enhancement.[Methods] We collected fundamental publication information timeline data from multiple sources including the Chinese Optics Journal Website, individual journal websites, CNKI, and WeChat surveys and analyzed the data using Excel. The analysis revealed distribution patterns in revision periods, online publication periods, and print publication periods. We analyzed the temporal differences between online and print publication periods and compared publication periods data between the statistical journals and journals from the Optical Society of America. [Findings] Some journals effectively reduce their publication periods through adopting measures such as implementing single-article pagination and early production version releases. However, the production phase accounted for three-quarters of the entire publication periods for the statistical journals, resulting in notably extended publication periods compared to journals from the Optical Society of America. [Conclusions] Domestic academic journals experience challenges with lengthy production phases. Effective measures, such as refining publication workflows, adopting information-based production management, developing production standards, cultivating professional technical editors, incorporationg advanced publishing technologies, and increasing recognition of online publishing importance, can improve publication efficiency, shorten publication periods, and enhance the timeliness and competitiveness of academic journals.
