Abstract:

[Purposes] Open access (OA) publishing is becoming the mainstream among various academic publishing modes. This paper aims to analyze journals published in different modes to explore the key influencing factors on journal influence and their influence differences, providing references and suggestions for the increase in journal influence and decision-making in operation. [Methods] A multiple regression analysis was carried out on the data of journals published in subscription, hybrid OA, and full OA modes in the Web of Science database from 2018 to 2022 to reveal the differences in journal influence in various publishing modes. [Findings] There is an inverted U-shaped relationship between the number of publications and the journal impact factor. The impact factor of a journal is positively associated with its level of international cooperation and the number of popular articles in the journal. If a journal's degree of OA publishing is higher, it gains greater influence. At the national level, more prominent influences are found in the United States and China, compared with other countries, on journal influence. Large-scale publishers dominate the OA publishing market, and the distinction of scales among different publishers has an increasingly important influence on journals with different publishing modes. Hybrid journals in disciplines that require rapid communication have a greater impact. [Conclusions] In the era of OA publishing, journals with different publishing modes need to balance quality and quantity, strengthen international cooperation, adapt to national policies, focus on the scale effect of publishers, and adjust development strategies according to the characteristics of disciplines to maintain and enhance academic influence.
