Abstract:

[Purposes] This study aims at exploring whether media report affect the impact of scientific journals marked by the cited frequency of papers and related factors, which is expected to promote the cooperation between scientific journals and media, and improve the impact of the journals. [Methods] With the data from the "Scientific Journals Meet Mass Media" project of China Association for Science and Technology, we used Mann-Whitney U test to examine how recommendation to the media and media report influence cited frequency of journal papers. [Findings] The cited frequency of papers recommended by journals to the mass media was significantly higher than that of papers which were not recommended. Among the recommended papers, those reported by the media failed to harvest significantly higher cited frequency than the papers that were not reported. [Conclusions] Media coverage failed to increase the cited frequency of papers in China. Efforts should be made by scientific journals to adopt multiple comprehensive methods for the improvement of the impact.
