Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper aims to investigate the current situation of the construction of special topics or columns in medical journals sponsored by universities, so as to provide support for the improvement of the construction quality of special topics or columns in medical journals sponsored by universities. [Methods] A total of 9 representative journals of medical journals sponsored by universities were selected as examples, and the column number, article number, cited frequency, and downloaded frequency of special topics or columns were counted. The highly cited and downloaded topics or columns were analyzed, as well as the topics or columns with a long publication time but low cited and downloaded frequencies, comparing with the non-special column papers in the same period. [Findings] Each journal has set up special topics or columns, but the number of special topics or columns and the number of articles are not stable. The average annual number of columns in 6 journals is no more than 3.0, and the average number of articles published in these columns (3.21) is small. There are 84.3% of the special topics or columns published in only one issue, while those with good continuity are cited and downloaded frequently. In addition to the review, comments, and guidelines, the numbers of special topics or columns related to oncology, infectious diseases, obstetrics and gynecology, and geriatrics are large, with higher downloaded and cited frequencies, which are far more than those of the non-special column articles in the same period. However, the cited and/or downloaded frequencies of 74.1% of special topics or columns are not very ideal, and the cited and downloaded frequencies of these special column articles are not better than those of non-special column articles in the same period. [Conclusions] Medical journals sponsored by universities need to pay attention to the investigation of special topics or columns, carefully conceive column names, expand expert resources through multiple channels, avoid the blindness and randomness of special topics or columns construction, and improve the quality and continuity of special topics or columns, so as to improve the journals' influence finally.
