[Purposes] This paper aims to create the baselines of citations for different subjects based on the citation percentile of the articles, and explore the methods for selecting representative works based on the baselines of citations. [Methods] Taking science and technology scholars in Henan Province as the research objects and the subject classification of Web of Science database as the basis, the baselines for the citations of articles in different subjects were established. Based on these baselines, a PR8 score was determined for each academic article published by scholars of various disciplines in Henan Province from 2009 to 2018; the threshold of representative works was that PR8 score was no less than 3. Among them, the paper with PR8 score ≥6 was the representative work of level I, the paper with PR8 score ≥5 was the representative work of level II, and the paper with PR8 score ≥3 was the representative work of level III. The excellent scholars selected by representative works with different levels were compared. [Findings] The baselines of citations for 177 disciplines are created. According to the selection criteria of representative works, 7707 representative works of the scholars in Henan Province are determined. The results of selecting outstanding scholars via representative articles and all articles and using different levels of representative articles are obviously different. [Conclusions] The baselines of citations have great significance in interdisciplinary academic evaluation. It can simply and clearly define the representative work in different disciplines, and it is imperative to practice the representative work-based evaluation system.
