[Purposes] This study aims to investigate the application of infographic in the content dissemination and promotion of medical scientific journals. [Methods] Based on the infographic contents on the websites of famous medical scientific journals such as New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, and British Medical Journal, together with the practice experiences of Chinese Medical Journal, the categories, production process, and specific applications of infographics were analyzed, and the applicability, obstacles, and countermeasures of the usage of infographics in domestic medical scientific journals were analyzed and considered. [Findings] Infographics on the websites of the famous medical scientific journals can be categorized into the following types: statistical chart, timeline/process line, comparison/contrast, description/diagram, network relationship, map, hierarchy, and word cloud. Infographics play an important role in the abstract display of academic information, and the concrete presentation of experiments and surgical operations. The making process of infographics requires the collaboration of multiple professionals including medical experts, academic editors, and art designers. Medical scientific journals in China can gradually improve the development ability of infographics by transforming to the collectivization and intensive management mode, strengthening the cultivation of versatile editors, and cooperating with third-party content production institutions. [Conclusions] In the context of digital publishing, the infographics play an important role in the content dissemination of medical scientific journals, and the domestic journals should pay attention to the development of the infographic contents, so as to continuously improve the competitiveness of content resources and improve the academic influence.
