Abstract:

Purposes This study investigates the development landscape of non-English scientific journals indexed in Scopus in 2024, aiming to provide references for advancing non-English scientific journals and constructing a diversified global publishing ecosystem. Methods Adopting a classification and statistical analysis approach, this paper systematically analyzes the overall profile, language distribution, subject field distribution, publishing models, paper carrying capacity, academic influence, and sustainable development capacity of non-English scientific journals included in the Scopus database. Findings Among non-English journals indexed in Scopus in 2024, Chinese, Spanish, and Russian journals rank the top three in terms of quantity. Significant differences exist in the breadth of sub-discipline coverage across journals in different languages, with Chinese journals achieving 100% sub-discipline coverage. Portuguese and Polish journals have relatively high open access (OA) rates, while German, Japanese, and Chinese journals have comparatively lower OA rates. In terms of publishing institutions, non-English journals generally exhibit a low degree of scale development. The top 3 institutions publishing the most journals in Chinese, Spanish, and other languages are predominantly local publishers, whereas English and German journals are dominated by large international publishing groups. The academic influence of Chinese journals stands out relatively among non-English journals. Non-English journals also attach great importance to fulfilling their social responsibilities and closely follow the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Conclusions Non-English journals, particularly Chinese scientific journals, play a crucial supporting role in building a diversified global publishing ecosystem. Non-English countries should urge international databases to expand the inclusion of non-English journals and collaboratively construct a global scientific paper citation database. They should also vigorously support the growth of domestic publishers to form a diversified publishing landscape, continuously enhance the paper carrying capacity and academic influence of national journals, and accelerate the open science process to elevate the global visibility and influence of non-English scientific journals.
