Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper investigates the author contribution statement (ACS) policies of social science journals in China and abroad, which is expected to serve as a reference for the formulation and improvement of ACS policies of Chinese social science journals. [Methods] Specifically, ACS as a mandatory requirement or not and the reasons, time and way of submitting ACS, position of ACS in papers, writing format of ACS, and terminologies of ACS elements were surveyed. [Findings] Foreign journals in each field of social sciences have ACS policies. By comparison, 18 out of 782 CSSCI journals have such policies, accounting for 2.3%. These 18 journals cover fields like Chinese literature, archeology, journalism and communication, and library and information sciences. Half of foreign journals stipulate the free-text style for ACS and the other half the CRediT taxonomy for ACS, while all the Chinese social science journals designate free-text style for ACS. The problems on ACS of Chinese social science journals are simple content, no specified submission time and way, and no uniform position and writing format. We suggest Chinese journals adopt tiered ACS policies to encourage the submission of ACS, standardize expression of ACS on the basis of CRediT taxonomy, and associate ACS with author ORCID. [Conclusions] A few Chinese social science journals have published ACS policies. Thus, Chinese social science journals should adopt a tiered method to promote the implementation of ACS policies and stipulate standardized terminologies to improve transparency and accessibility of author contributions.
