Abstract:

[Purposes] To explore the current situation of online first publishing in Chinese medicine university journals and propose optimization paths. [Methods] Based on the data from China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), a survey was conducted on the online first publishing status of 55 medicine university journals included in the 2023 China Science and Technology Journal Citation Report Core Edition(Natural Science) from 2021 to 2023, including whether online first publishing has been carried out, publishing methods, online first publishing rates and changes, and publication delays shortened by online first publishing. At the same time, the characteristics of high cited papers with online first publishing were analyzed. [Findings] The number of journals carrying out online first publishing is gradually increasing, Currently, 60.0% of medicine university journals have carried out online first publishing. The online first publishing of papers is mainly after acceptance, and online first publishing significantly shortens the publication delay of journals. The high cited papers with online first publishing mainly come from high-quality journals. The main types of papers are clinical medicine, review, etc., and the papers on reviews, guidelines, and epidemiology have high citation frequency and download frequency per article. Most of the papers are supported by national or provincial foundation. The high cited papers with online first publishing cover 39 research directions, among which traditional Chinese medicine, oncology, obstetrics and gynecology, neurology and psychiatry have higher numbers of highly cited papers, citation frequency, and download frequency. The research topics focus on diabetes and related complications, elderly related diseases, etc. Nineteen affiliations have produced many highly cited papers with online first publishing. [Conclusions] The online first publishing of medical university journals has achieved a certain scale, but there is still considerable room for improvement in some publications. It is necessary to further increase the utilization of online first publishing platform, and optimize the path of online first publishing, including purposefully selecting papers from paper type, research direction, research topic, funding support, and author affiliation, based on characteristics analysis of the highly cited papers with online first publishing; choosing a suitable online publishing method for the journal; combining enhanced publishing to improve the efficiency of online first publishing if conditions permit; further standardizing the author’s submission behavior. Chinese medicine university journals can optimize the online publishing path based on their publishing situation, so as to improve the efficiency of online first publishing and actual publication effectiveness.
