Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper systematically studies the general rule of publication frequency change and its influencing mechanism on academic journals, aiming to balance the pursuit of expansion and quality improvement for high-quality development. [Methods] Using data of economic core journals issued in China, we investigated the history, causes, and consequences of publication frequency change through data, text, and case analysis, and studied the impacts on academic journals by mechanism analysis. [Findings] Publication frequency change has positive and negative effects on academic journals through publication delay and number of articles. [Conclusions] While pursuing scale effect, academic journals should also fully consider the possible adverse effects brought by shortening the publication frequency, and make prudent decisions putting quality first. We can adopt other effective measures to make the positive mechanism work when not ready for change, make preparations during transition, and hedge the negative effects through risk control measures after the change.
