Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper aims to analyze the characteristics of academic journals of social sciences and humanities (SSH) at home and abroad indexed by Scopus, so as to propose suggestions to enhance the international impact of China's SSH journals. [Methods] Using classification statistics and comparative analysis, we analyzed the overall situation of journals included in Scopus and SSH journals from major countries including China. [Findings] English, French, and Spanish journals have advantages in international communication, while Chinese journals are disadvantaged. The SSH journals from the US and UK play a dominant role in Scopus. Despite its rapid increase, the number of Chinese SSH journal ranks 13th in Scopus. The international impact of the SSH journals in the US, Russia, Japan, Republic of Korea, India, and China is weaker than that of scientific journals, while this trend is opposite in Italy and France. Except the SSH journals in Spain, Italy, France, Brazil, and Russia which are indexed by Scopus are generally published in their official language, most SSH journals in other countries are published in English. Journals in Psychology in the US are more than that in the UK, but journals of the latter in all the other subjects and disciplines are the most. Journals of China involve the majority subjects and disciplines, but a few are not involved. Most of the SSH journals in the UK, the US, and the Netherlands are published by five major international journal publishing groups. In other countries, a small amount or no journals are published by the five major publishing groups, and China has intensive cooperation with the five major groups. The SSH journals in Brazil, Spain, Poland, and China account for a large proportion in open access journals, while the proportion is low in countries such as the UK, the US, the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Italy. The CiteScore of SSH journals in the UK, the US, Canada, and China is high, while that in Italy and France is low. Compared with pure SSH journals, interdisciplinary journals have higher CiteScore, and the CiteScore of SSH journals is not strongly associated with the open access status. [Conclusions] China shall create more SSH journals published in English and new disciplines. Efforts should be made to integrate Chinese journals and strengthen the awareness and ability of Chinese SSH journals in international communication. Strong independent communication platforms should be built in China. The administrative management departments, journal supervisors, and sponsors of Chinese journals should provide supportive policies and funds and appropriately increase the proportion of open access journals as well.
