Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper analyzes the status quo and the problems of journals of humanities and social sciences founded during 2017—2021 in China, which provides a reference for their development. [Methods] A total of 111 academic journals of humanities and social sciences founded or renamed during this period were selected, and the data such as basic information, number of publications, use of new media, and prevalence of open access were collected from official websites of journals, CNKI, and WeChat official accounts. On this basis, the status quo and problems were summarized and suggestions were put forward. [Findings] These journals are mainly created by universities, research institutes, and publishing enterprises. Most of them are quarterlies, and they generally attach great importance to the use of new media. The majority originated from the collected papers found many years ago. However, they face such challenges as uneven distribution of regions and disciplines, long publication cycle, limited number of publications, and little support from the government. [Conclusions] In addition to optimizing the structure and layout of the new journals of humanities and social sciences, the government should start the funding plan of new journals, and the journals themselves should work harder to attract quality papers and adjust the publication cycle.
