Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper studies the differences between the number and influence of open access (OA) papers in Chinese and American chemical journals from 2011 to 2021, puts forward some suggestions for the development of Chinese chemical journals, and provides reference for their OA transformation. [Methods] Based on Web of Science database, the total number of papers, the number and citation index of OA papers published by Chinese and American authors in international journals, Chinese journals, and American journals were counted and analyzed by bibliometrics. [Findings] (1) In the past 11 years, the average number of papers of Chinese authors accounted for 30.30% of the total number of papers published in the world, and the average proportion of OA papers was 5.64%, while the average number of papers of American authors accounted for 15.39%, and the average proportion of OA papers of American authors was 5.68%. In particular, the total number of Chinese authors' papers and the number of OA papers exceeded those of American authors in recent 5 years. OA papers of American authors have higher citation impact and proportion of the high-level papers than Chinese OA papers. (2) The number of chemical journals in China and the average volume of papers are small, resulting in a small number of papers in Chinese chemical journals, only accounting for an average of 2.28% in the total number of papers in international chemistry in recent 11 years. However, the number of chemical journals in America and the average volume of papers are large, which accounts for an average of 26.68% in the total number of papers in international chemistry. (3) The average deficit index of total papers in China and America was 84.91, and the average ratio of Chinese papers flowing to America was 76.3%. In recent 11 years, the average foreign deficit index of Chinese papers is 167 (the highest is 390 in 2021), the average foreign deficit index of OA papers is 97, and the average total outflow rate of Chinese papers is 93.0%. America shows a surplus in the total number of chemical papers and OA papers. [Conclusions] Some strategies should be considered to be adopted, such as launching new OA journals about chemical disciplines, encouraging researchers workers to publish outstanding achievements in domestic journals, opening the channel for "paper transfer", strengthening the transformation of the domestic chemical journals into OA journals, in order to curb the outflow of chemical papers in some degree and promote the development of chemical scientific journals in China.
