Non-academic columns in Nature: Components, functions, and implications for scientific journals in China

摘要:

【目的】揭示Nature非学术栏目在期刊中的作用及作用方式,以探索我国科技期刊科学办刊途径,从而促进我国科技期刊学术影响力的提高。【方法】以不同年份出版的4期Nature作为研究对象,分析非学术栏目的构成、文章内容和目标读者,并统计文章的字数、被引频次和自引次数。【结果】非学术栏目的主要功能是以科普方式宣传、解读学术论文,次要功能是构建Nature的良好生态,而不是凭自身获取被引频次和自引次数来提高期刊影响因子。【结论】非学术栏目以科普短文形式宣传、解读了Nature的学术论文,我国科技期刊应学习Nature宣传学术论文的方式方法,其中Nature的120 words/180汉字的科普短文宣传法简单有效,易于模仿应用。

Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper aims to reveal function of non-academic columns in Nature for enhancing academic impact of papers in Chinese scientific journals. [Methods] The components of non-academic columns, contents of essays and targeting readers, and counting words, citations, self-references of essays in non-academic columns of 4 issues of the Nature published in different years were analyzed. [Findings] The main function of the non-academic columns is to interpret Nature's academic papers through science communication, and the secondary function is to build a favorable environment for Nature itself, but rather than to simply obtain citations and self-references so that Nature can elevate the impact factor based on Scientific Citation Index. [Conclusions] The non-academic columns can promote and interpret Nature's academic papers to be widely read, accepted and applied in the reader's research through non-academic essays in the form of science communication, which may be one of key notes for Nature success. Chinese scientific journals should learn its advertisement ways and methods for academic papers. Among them, the short essays with around 120 words in English or 180 words in Chinese may easily be applied.
