Abstract:

[Purposes] This study aims to investigate the practice of Chinese academic journals in response to major emergencies, such as the reaction speed, adaptability, digital publishing, research content, and dissemination effects. [Methods] The papers published on CNKI platform themed around COVID-19 research were collected as survey objects. A data mining program written through Phyth 3.6 was used to obtain the publishing papers and their journal information, and Excel software was used for statistical analysis of the data. [Findings] During the period from January 21, 2020 to February 26, 2020, a total of 146 Chinese academic journals have published 565 COVID-19 research articles in the form of open access on CNKI platform, thematically covering epidemic prediction, epidemic prevention and control, clinical diagnosis and treatment, and viral pathology. The CNKI platform has a great influence and significant effect in the process of integration and dissemination. As of February 27, 2020, 460 papers with publicly downloaded data have been downloaded 719485 times, each of which has been downloaded 1571 times on average and 18 of which have been downloaded more than 5000 times. There are 228 papers downloaded more than 1000 times, accounting for 49.6%. [Conclusions] The academic journals in China have many problems in the epidemic prevention and control, e.g., the response speed to major public emergencies appears not fast enough, the digital publishing capacity remains not strong enough, and the application of online priority publication platform is inadequate, which lead to such issues as regional imbalances in driving forces. It is suggested that there are more efforts in demand for Chinese academic journals to accelerate the speeds of digitization, intensification, and integration of journal publishing.
