Abstract:

[Purposes] The aim of this research is to investigate the current status of the international reputation of Chinese scientific journals and to explore the strategies for enhancing it. [Methods] We established an evaluation system for the international reputation of journals. Then, we conducted a questionnaire survey among international researchers. The evaluation of the international reputation of Chinese scientific journals was carried out from three aspects: overall impression, academic reputation, and service reputation. [Findings] A total of 546 questionnaires are collected from 53 countries and regions, among which 507 are valid. The result indicates that international researchers' familiarity with Chinese scientific journals is only at a moderate level. The evaluation of overall impression and academic reputation are slightly higher, while the recognition in the three dimensions of service reputation remains generally low. The main way for respondents to access Chinese scientific journals is through search engines. Among the factors affecting the international reputation of journals, the ones related to journal publishing quality account for the largest proportion. [Conclusions] The main problems of the international reputation of Chinese scientific journals are the lack of authoritative editorial boards, the low service level, the low accessibility and recognition, and the unremarkable bibliometric indicators. The fundamental solution to these problems lies in the improvement of the quality and quantity of journal content. The strategies include actively inviting well-known experts in the industry to serve as chief editors or editorial board members, establishing international editorial teams, expanding the scale of high-quality journals, and formulating policies to attract high-quality achievements. To address the problems of low recognition and accessibility, it is essential to heighten brand awareness, create a prominent journal brand image, boost the development of journal consortia, enhance publicity on international platforms, and cultivate international academic cooperation.
