[Purposes] This paper aims to introduce the linkage effect used in optimizing and innovating topic selection, and achieve the purpose of expanding the manuscript source and improving the academic quality of journals. [Methods] Through the introduction of the concept and case of linkage effect, the specific path of linkage effect in the topic selection of medical and health journals was analyzed. [Findings] The specific paths of linkage effect on the topic selection of medical and health journals are as follows. Firstly, we select the linkage source according to the analysis results of medical policies, literature and conference information, medical and health news events, academic pre-landscape of editorial board members, and information science and bibliometrics. Secondly, linkage source information is disseminated and shared by clarifying major and difficult academic issues, developing topic guide. Finally, the feedback and mutual improvement of the linkage effect are achieved. Taking the topic of chronic kidney disease in the Chinese Journal of Nephrology as an example, the research shows that the linkage effect can play an important role in the topic selection. [Conclusions] The use of linkage effect on optimizing and innovating topic selection in medical and health journals can expand the source of manuscripts, form a good ecological situation of positive feedback, and promote the coordinated development of journals and disciplines.
