Abstract:

[Purposes] This study aims to explore the relationship between citation frequency and Altmetrics in clinical medical papers, in order to put forward the strategies to promote the academic influence of medical scientific journals from the perspective of Altmetrics. [Methods] Hot papers of ESI in clinical medical field were used as research targets. The citation frequencies were extracted from Web of Science, Altmetric Attention Score (AAS) from Altmetric.com,PlumX Metrics from Scopus database, including four Altmetrics metadata, i.e., usage, captures, mentions, and social media. Rank correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlation among citation frequency, AAS, and Altmetrics metadata. [Findings] The citation frequency was weakly positively correlated with AAS, moderately positively correlated with the usage, weakly positively correlated with captures and mentions, and very weakly positively correlated with social media. [Conclusions] From the perspective of Altmetrics, medical journal publishers can enhance the academic influence by increasing the exposure of publishing literature in the social communication environment. Specific approaches include enhancing the accessibility of papers, improving friendly docking with document management software, initiatively sending press releases to mainstream media, and establishing encyclopedic entries for original research. Transmitting documents through social media such as Twitter and Facebook has little effect on enhancing academic influence of medical journals.
