Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper aims to probe into the interdisciplinary research intensity of academic journals and articles and its relationship with academic impact. [Methods] This article took the articles in information science and library science included in Web of Science database in 2013 and the journals on which they were published as the research objects. The Brillouin index (BI) of each article and journal was calculated. The cited frequency was used to measure the academic impact of articles, while the impact factor, 5-year impact factor, eigenfactor, and article influence score were adopted to characterize the academic impact of journals. SPSS statistical software was employed to analyze the relationship between BI and cited frequency of articles and the relationship of BI with the evaluation indicators of journals. [Findings] The BI of articles is in a highly significantly positive correlation with the cited frequency. Journal BI is positively correlated with the total cites, impact factor, article influence score, non-self-citing impact factor, and other indicators of journals, especially the 5-year impact factor. [Conclusions] The stronger the interdisciplinary research intensity of articles and journals in information science and library science, the higher the academic impact.
