Abstract:

[Purposes] This study focuses on the cover stories of Nature from 2020 to 2022 and analyzes the expression and methods of visual rhetoric, so as to provide new insights and references for the cover design of scientific journals in China. [Methods] Based on the theory of visual rhetoric, a case analysis approach was employed to investigate 153 covers of Nature between 2020 and 2022. Through a comparative analysis of the visual rhetoric features of these cover stories, the methods of visual rhetoric were summarized. [Findings] The analysis reveals that the cover stories of Nature have systematic visual rhetorical logic and methods, including metaphors and metonymy in narration, accumulation and succession in composition, and exaggeration and simulation in modeling. [Conclusions] To more effectively harness visual rhetoric for the dissemination of scientific information on covers, scientific journals should integrate a variety of visual rhetoric methods. This involves employing simple and easily understandable symbolic narratives, methodically arranged compositions, and visually rich and prominent modeling, so as to optimize the visual expression of their covers.
