Abstract:

[Purposes] By analyzing global publishing trend of zoology in SCIE from 1997 to 2019, this paper aims to gain an insight into the current publishing demand of this subject in China, which is expected to provide reference data for research institutions, publishing management and evaluation agencies, and editors to set a reasonable goal on paper output and scientific publishing development, clarify target readers and authors, and formulate personalized strategies for improving journal impact. [Methods] The publishing volume, contribution of authors from different nationalities to the volume, impact factor, and other indexes of SCIE-indexed zoology journals at five time points in 1997-2019 were compared and analyzed. [Findings] In the 23 years, the median impact factor, aggregate impact factor, annual number of papers, and proportion of open access journals of the SCIE-indexed zoology journals soared. The US, United Kingdom, and Germany enjoyed a large percentage of quality journals. From 2008 to 2019, the proportion of papers published by scholars from China on this subject has significantly risen, but the number of Chinese SCIE-indexed zoology journals and the number of papers have kept at a low level. [Conclusions] The publishing capacity of Chinese SCIE-indexed zoology journals fail to keep pace with the rapid development of this subject. Facing the gradual increase of quality journals from developed countries, journal publishers in China should make full use of the national supportive resources to launch new journals on this subject.
