Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper aims to analyze the difference of published articles among Chinese Medical Journal (CMJ), New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA), and The Lancet, and explore the development approach for Chinese medical journals. [Methods] All articles published in the CMJ, NEJM, JAMA and The Lancet from 2014 to 2016 were searched and analyzed based on Clarivate Analytics database. The author contributions of the top 10 articles ranked by the citation frequency for the last three years were explored. [Findings] Compared with those of NEJM, JAMA and The Lancet, the levels of immediacy index and cited half-life of CMJ are very low, and the overall citation rate is also at a low level. However, the proportion of native authors of CMJ is very high compared with those of NEJM, JAMA and The Lancet, and most authors of CMJ are from Asia and other developing countries. [Conclusions] The total number of articles which have little influence in the world is large in CMJ. CMJ should take efficient measures to cooperate with international publishers to attract excellent articles, increase the rate of articles wrote by foreign authors, improve the article quality, and realize journal concern degree of internationalization. In this way, CMJ would truly become a bellwether for international brands of English journals in China.
