Abstract:

[Purposes] The exploration of intrinsic relationship between the highly cited paper and the fluctuation of journal impact factor is of significance for the development of theory and practice of journal's evaluation. [Methods] Based on the database of Web of Science, we took 20 international top journals (such as Nature and Science) and 2 journals (Acta Crystallographica Section A and Chinese Physics C)as examples to analyze the changes of bibliometric indices including the total number of papers, the total citations, the maximum number of citations, and the average number of citations. [Findings] RHT which is the ratio of the maximum number of citations to the total citations, RHM which is the ratio of the maximum number of citations to the average number of citations, and REM which is the ratio of the average number of citations to the corresponding value with the maximum number of citations removed all exhibit different characteristics and rules for the normal and abnormal fluctuations of impact factors. [Conclusions] RHT, REM, and RHM can be used to effectively discriminate whether the fluctuation of impact factor is normal or not, hence providing a reference for the calculation of journal impact factor and the reasonable construction of journal evaluation system.
