Abstract:

[Purposes] This study is to investigate the searching preferences of domestic scholars, and formulate the corresponding countermeasures, so as to provide references for academic journals to improve articles' discoverability. [Methods] We designed a questionnaire, send it to over 4000 readers, authors, and peer reviewers from Transactions of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Journal of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and 286 respondents, holding different positions, from undergraduates to professors, and obtained their answers. We cross-referred their answers with their positions and ages, and found certain patterns. [Findings] Young scholars prefer to read Chinese articles while senior ones to English articles. When searching Chinese papers, majority of them tend to go to CNKI first. When searching English papers, they diverge with different positions: young scholars intend to use Google and Google Scholar, while senior scholars prefer the library discovery system. Most scholars identify article's title as the most important influence factor to determine a target article. Most find the full texts from large aggregators subscribed by their affiliations' libraries. The open access has become a promising choice for full texts. [Conclusions] These tendencies inspire us to propose a package of strategies for Chinese and English journals, including their developing goals and mutual benefits principles. Academic journals also need to investigate the IT technologies and approaches to improve Chinese journals' discoverability in China's publishing platforms, as well as those to elevate English journals' discoverability in search engines and library discovery systems. They also have to expand publishing on open access platforms, which is an important way to obtain high discoverability in the future development of academic publishing.
