Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper aims to explore the contribution of papers on COVID-19 to journal impact factor, so as to deepen the understanding of the essential characteristics of journal impact factor and provide suggestions for improving the influence of Chinese journals and a reference for rationally evaluating scientific journals. [Methods] In view of the inflationary growth of journal impact factor based on JCR 2022 issued by Clarivate, about 3.64 million publications (with 33000 papers on COVID-19) and 18.64 million citations of 11000 journals were quantitatively analyzed. The relationship between the contribution rate and citation of papers on COVID-19 and the increase in journal impact factor was investigated, and the contribution of papers on COVID-19 to journals of different divisions and subject areas and the impact factor of Chinese journals was explored.[Findings] Papers on COVID-19 have positive effects on the impact factor of 87.0% of journals and have a contribution of 31.1% to the increase in impact factor. As the JCR quartile of the journal gets higher, the contribution of papers on COVID-19 is greater. This effect is observed not only in the fields of clinical medicine, psychiatry, and psychology but also in fields such as biology and chemistry. The impact factor of Chinese journals increases rapidly, and papers on COVID-19 have played an important role, contributing 20.5% to the increase in impact factor. [Conclusions] Scientific research on COVID-19 has contributed to the increase in the impact factor of most journals. In the face of such major emergencies, Chinese journals should seize research frontiers and hotspots, enhance emergency publishing capabilities, and improve academic influence and brand recognition. At the same time, more robust indicators and more fine-grained classification systems should be explored to meet the great challenges brought by such emergencies to the scientific research evaluation system.
