Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper aims to analyze the tendency of winners of Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in publishing their research articles and explore whether these major innovative articles were published on top international journals with high impact factors, which is expected to serve as a reference for scientific researchers. [Methods] We searched for the earliest articles associated with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine of every winner from 1989 to 2019 in PubMed and Web of Science and analyzed the related journals, their impact factor and quartiles in JCR, countries of related journals, and publishing time of the articles. [Findings] Nobel Prize winners published articles mainly on top international journals such as Nature (22.89%), Cell (14.46%), and Science (10.84%) in the United States (55.42%) and the United Kingdom (38.55%). A vast majority (79.52%) of them are found on journals in JCR-Q1. In addition, the number of these articles on journals of the winners' home countries sees great differences, which is polarized. The Nobel Prize winners and the journals demonstrate a win-win relationship. [Conclusions] Publishing high-quality scientific papers on journals of home countries is not only a reflection of the confidence in culture, but also an important impetus to domestic scientific journal development. Scholars in China should put SCI in perspective and establish a scientific evaluation system with both Chinese characteristics and global vision.
