Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper probes into the professional status of young editors of scientific journals in different regions of China and proposes methods for cultivating young editors according to regional differences. [Methods] Questionnaires were distributed to the young editors of scientific journals in six provinces/municipalities, and the basic information, training or continuing education, contest participation, and subjective feelings about the current situation and future development of this occupation were investigated. A total of 371 valid questionnaires were recovered and analyzed. [Findings] Most of the respondents loved this job. The salary of young editors in the eastern and central regions was higher than that in the western regions (P<0.05), but the young editors showed low satisfaction to the salary. Young editors in the western regions participated more in editing contest (P<0.05) compared with those from other regions, but the overall participation rate was still low. The frequency of continuing education in eastern and central regions was higher than that in western regions (P<0.05). There was no regional difference in the mental stress of young editors (P>0.05). Nearly 60% of the respondents had working pressure and 37.20% thought of changing the profession. [Conclusions] Efforts should be stepped up to improve the salary and welfare of young editors, promote the participation in contests, and strengthen the continuing education by optimizing training content and methods, precision training, differentiated training, and training for new employees. Moreover, we should care about the physical and mental health and the thoughts of young editors.
