Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper investigated the continuing medical education (CME) modes in medical journals, which is expected to enhance the potential of medical journals to fill the gap between research and clinical practice. [Methods] A comprehensive survey was conducted on CME modes of 3 foreign medical journals (Annals of Internal Medicine, JAMA, and BMJ) and 9 Chinese medical journals (including National Medical Journal of China, Chinese Journal of Surgery, Chinese Journal of Pediatrics, and so on) based on their official websites. To be specific, the data such as the materials, topics, content, structures, and forms of CME courses were collected. The differences in CME modes between medical journals in China and abroad were analyzed. [Findings] The 3 foreign medical journals all developed sound platforms or modules for CME and offered CME courses with the following characteristics: materials not limited to journal articles, diversified topics such as medical professional knowledge and skills, medical ethics standards, and communication skills between doctors and patients, various forms such as image and text, video, and audio, tests evaluating both professional knowledge and practical abilities, and simple processes for the application of CME credits. In contrast, medical journals in China lacked the sound platforms or modules and the CME courses showed the following features: limited topics, materials from only a few types of journal articles (mainly reviews and expert commentaries), mainly one form available (text) and only few courses in image-text form, tests evaluating mainly professional knowledge, and complex procedure for the application of CME credits. [Conclusions] Chinese medical journals should improve CME quality in the terms of materials, forms, content, and test, in a bid to promote the transformation from medical knowledge to clinical practice.
