Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper aims to study the characteristics and differences of journal Impact Factor (JIF) and CiteScore from the levels of disciplines and journals, which is of certain significance for discipline competitiveness index screening and discipline development. [Methods] The shared journals of Web of Science and Scopus were retrieved. The ESI discipline classification system, cosine similarity, Kendall's coefficient of concordance, Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA, cumulative absolute difference, and mean algorithm were applied to analyze the differences between JIF and CiteScore and the differences between them for specific journals and disciplines. [Findings] The overall cosine similarity between CiteScore and JIF and the cosine similarities for specific disciplines were all higher than 0.8, but the value distributions of them were significantly different. There was no significant difference in the value distribution of them for Computer Science, Microbiology, and Multidisciplinary, but the difference for Computer Science was the largest. [Conclusions] The differences between CiteScore and JIF are attributed to their calculation principles, differences in paper propagation speed and citation rules among disciplines, etc.
