Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper aims to develop an operational method and process for map content verification suitable for direct utilization in the editorial offices of scientific journals. [Methods] Maps reflect the essence and regularity of phenomena by graphic visual variables (shape, size, color, etc.) of map symbols (areas, lines, and points). Based on this principle, this paper establishes correlation mapping between the key verification content specified in the map review and the visual variables (shape, size, color, and names) of map elements (areas, lines, and points) using the unified language of "map symbols". [Findings] The process for internal review (preliminary review) of map content in the editorial offices of journals is optimized and standardized. Based on elements of areas, lines, and points, a systematic map content verification method is proposed. The verification is conducted in an orderly manner according to the shape, size, color, and names (annotations). [Conclusions] This method provides a reference for journal editors, especially those in non-geographical fields, to rapidly, comprehensively, and effectively conduct preliminary map content reviews.
