Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper analyzes the changes of the connotation and role of content and dissemination methods of academic journals, so as to help editors to meet the rapid changes of academic publishing. [Methods] From the perspective of the role change of content, academic publishing has evolved from "taking content as foundation", to "regarding content as the king", and "endowing new content with the fundamental role". We dissected the roles and functions of content at different stages of academic publishing from the aspects of user characteristics, content production mode, publishing technology, communication technology (tool), and business mode of academic journals. [Findings] As the role of content altered from the foundation to the king, the roles of authors, readers, and publishers all changed, and the services of academic journals for authors, readers, and others in the academic community varied. Clarifying these changes will assist the whole publishing industry tailoring publishing strategy to the altered academic information dissemination mode. [Conclusions] Academic journal publishing industry should prioritize content and making full use of the "content" will help the industry to cope with the variation of academic information dissemination.
