Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper aims to study the far-reaching impact of COVID-19 on academic communication and publishing. [Methods] With the methods of literature research and case study, we explored the changes in academic environment brought by COVID-19 and discussed the overall trend of academic publishing and the response of academic publishing institutions in China and abroad. [Findings] COVID-19 changed the academic environment in the following aspects: accelerating the process of open science, popularizing the rapid-transmitting pre-print mode, promoting fast academic communication by open peer view, directing more fund support to COVID-19 research, and guiding more Chinese scholars to quickly involve in COVID-19 research. Against this backdrop, academic publishing institutions took many positive measures to provide various free service for the scientific community, such as enabling the free access of more groups to knowledge service and providing a vast amount of knowledge and multiple channels for rapid publication of papers on COVID-19. [Conclusions] Academic publishing institutions in China and abroad should establish an emergency mechanism for academic publishing so as to enhance knowledge service ability and promote knowledge innovation and dissemination, thereby adapting to the new and rapidly developing academic environment.
