Abstract:

[Purposes] This study aims to analyze the difference between CiteScore (CS) and impact factor (IF) in academic journal evaluation by comparing CS in different discipline journals. [Methods] Eight disciplines with different aggregated cited half-life in the Journal Citation Report (JCR) database were selected. All-round statistical analysis was adopted to discuss journal CS and IF in different disciplines. The IF was derived from the JCR in 2015 published by Clarivate Analytics, and CS was collected from the Journal Metrics database in 2015 published by the Elsevier Group. [Findings] The correlation coefficient of CS and IF is 0.922 (P=0.000) in the 380 journals from the selected 8 disciplines. The CSs of most journals in the eight disciplines are larger than IFs. The differences between CS and IF have statistical significance in four disciplines, namely statistics and probability theory, communication, political science, and history. The IFs of most journals in multidisciplinary and comprehensive medicine journals are larger than CSs, but the correlation coefficient of CS and IF is 0.871. [Conclusions] CS has a high level of consistency with IF in journal impact evaluation. The CS shows a certain degree of superiority for journal evaluation in longer cited half-life discipline.
