[Purposes]This paper aims to effectively detect excessive self-citation of academ ic journals and restrain the behavior of manipulating the impact factor.[Methods]The author screened out journals having excessive self-citation from SCIsource journals of food science and technology according to SPSS box plot, and discussed the advantages of the two-year self-cited rate as the excessive self-citation detection index through the theoretical analysis and comparison analysismethod.[Findings]Compared to the self-cited rate, the two-year self-cited rate has larger dispersion degree, is preferable to identify excessive self-citation, is more sensitive to excessive self-citation, and has higher response speed, so that it ismore beneficial to successful detection of journals w ith excessive self-citation.[Conclusions]The two-year self-cited rate is a preferable quantitative index for detecting excessive self-citation of academ ic journals.
