Abstract:

[Purposes] This study aims to explore the features of stance markers in the conclusion section of optical English scientific papers published at home and abroad, so as to promote the language internationalization of China-sponsored English scientific journals and enhance their international influence. [Methods] The foreign journal Optics Express and the Chinese journal Chinese Optics Letters were selected as sample data. The corpus software AntiConc 3.3.5 was used to retrieve and count the conclusions of 60 papers. [Findings] English-speaking scholars from Optics Express employ stance markers in a comprehensive and balanced manner. Chinese scholars from Chinese Optics Letters employ stance markers in an incomplete and unbalanced manner, either overusing one marker or never using others. There are significant differences in the dimensions of hedges, boosters, attitude, and stylistic markers among Chinese and English-speaking scholars. [Conclusions] Chinese scholars are not fully aware of the importance of constructing stance and identity. The authors should learn and fully understand the role that stance markers play in academic discourse, so as to raise their awareness to construct stance. In addition, the editors should help the authors to balance the use of stance markers.
