Abstract:

[Purposes] This paper proposes a method to identify abnormal Open Access (OA) journals for the current development status of OA journals. It aims at making early warnings about the academic reputation risks of OA journals, guiding OA journals in standardizing publishing behaviors, and purifying the academic environment. [Methods] We analyzed the composition of academic reputation of OA journals from the perspective of reputation incentive theory: ascribed advantages and achieved efforts. We also evaluated the dimensions of OA journals undertaking academic reputation risks and proposed corresponding indicators. An international OA journal was selected for measurement analysis and feasibility test of abnormal OA journal identification model. [Finding] OA journals have obvious ascribed advantages compared with traditional journals, but abnormal behavior often occurs in the process of acquired development, mainly in the aspects of the writing scale, self-citation, research value, author source and peer review. The abnormal OA journal identification model put forward in this paper is feasible and applicable to journals of natural science or comprehensive disciplines. [Conclusions] The key to the sustainable development of OA journals lies in their achieved efforts. Identifying abnormal OA journals can help authors and readers screen journal sources and normalize academic behavior.
